Pioneer Institute Inc. (PII) was founded in 2012 as a non-profit historical association. Its founder, Mikal Naeem Nash, realized that there was not an institution in New Jersey where one could get reliable historical information concerning the evolution of Muslim community life in New Jersey. The history of African American Muslims, which is a part of the civil rights movement narrative, in particular, was an untold story about a group of people—pioneers, frequently misunderstood by the public. But the pioneer spirit is not limited to the African American experience. Muslims from all walks of life from many cities and distant lands have chosen the United States of America and New Jersey as their place of settlement, although their stories, too, are not well known by the public. Pioneer Institute Inc., therefore, was founded to fill the void in the untold pages of history. It is an organization that would focus on educating students and the public about the histories and cultures of American Muslims and Americans of African descent in all their complexity and diversity. Above all Pioneer Institute Inc. will seek to educate people and build bridges of understanding between all people.
